Why you should never let your car run out of petrol

Stopping to fill up with petrol can be really annoying, particularly if you are running late for work or getting the kids to school before the bell.

Modern cars, although hugely more fuel efficient than older models, will not run on vapours so if you let the fuel tank get so low that you run out of petrol, you can in fact damage your car!

Relying on the fuel gauge to tell you that have 20 klms left in petrol, may not be entirely accurate.  If you are stuck in heavy freeway traffic, that 20 klms may actually only be 15 klms so you run the risk of breaking down on the side of the road.

Don’t let your fuel tank get to below a quarter of a tank before you top up.

Letting your fuel tank run that low that your car stops, can lead to blockage in the fuel filter.  Sediment from fuel settles in the bottom on the fuel tank. By driving on a near empty fuel tank, the car is using the dirty fuel at the bottom of the tank.

Depending on the type of car you drive, paying for a new fuel filter can be way more costly than what it would have cost to simply fill the tank.

On a more serious note, if you let the car run out of fuel, you may not be able to maintain control of the car.  If the fuel tank runs completely dry, the brakes and power steering can stop functioning leading to a very dangerous situation.
