Whilst we can do things to prepare for a break-down, most of the time they come right out of the blue. In some cases, if you are lucky enough you can pull over to safety, however in some scenarios you could be stranded in the middle of busy traffic.
Here’s some tips to bear in mind if you do break down.
Firstly, don’t panic, breath.
If your car feels a bit odd, jumpy or is losing power, pull over to the side of the road as quickly as possible. If you do end up stalled in the middle of the road, immediately put on your emergency hazard lights. If it’s not too dangerous try and enlist some help to get your car pushed over to safety and away from traffic. If you can’t move your car out of traffic, leave your car and go wait somewhere that is safe.
Never stand behind or in front of your car.
Use reflective triangles if you have them, to alert other drivers that you have broken down.
If its late at night, stay in your car and lock your doors. If anyone approaches the car open your window slightly to talk to them. Don’t accept a ride from a stranger.
If you are broken down due to an accident, it’s best not to move a thing until the police arrive.
